Follow these instructions.

Thank-you for choosing Steveston Tattoo Company for your new tattoo! Here is a comprehensive instruction sheet for the aftercare and maintenance of your tattoo.

Remember, the most important thing is to listen to your artist! We can only guarantee and take responsibility for the health of your tattoo if you do exactly what we tell you to do.

Your bandage should stay on for a minimum or 12 hours and a maximum of 24 hours unless your artist tells you otherwise.

When you remove your bandage, wash your hands first, then thoroughly wash your tattoo with a mild fragrance free hand soap such as Dial or Dove. Use your bare hands or a soft washcloth made for infants to wash your tattoo. Use a heavy lather of soap and firmly, but not roughly, wash your tattoo. Then make sure to thoroughly rinse off the soap, blood, plasma and vaseline. You may need to wash your tattoo 2 or 3 times to get all of the vaseline/plasma off.

When you have finished washing your tattoo, pat it dry with a CLEAN towel. If your tattoo appears to be sticky after drying it off, gently wash it again to ensure that all of the vaseline/plasma has been removed.

You should wash your tattoo 1-2 times a day gently with a mild fragrance free hand soap, and pat dry with a clean towel until it is completely healed.

Fragrance free lotion may be applied a couple days after you get your tattoo unless your artist specifies otherwise. This lotion should be applied after cleaning in very thin amounts, up to 2 times a day. Make sure to thoroughly rub the lotion into the skin, do not leave it sitting on the surface.  Do not use: Sunscreen, tanning lotion, fragranced oils, Aloe Vera, A&D or cortisone cream until your tattoo is fully healed. Lotions containing these ingredients should also be avoided.

While healing:

  • No swimming or soaking your tattoo

  • If you workout, make sure to avoid exercises that strain the area that was tattooed and wipe gym equipment, mat and floors before use

  • No unnecessary touching your tattoo

  • No scratching or picking at scabs

  • Avoid contact with pets and your new tattoo while it is healing

Secondskin Aftercare Instructions

Your bandage should stay on for a minimum 1 day and a maximum of 3 days unless your artist tells you otherwise. For the first 24 hours, there may be a build up of plasma, excess ink and blood. This is completely normal. If build up becomes excessive (large pockets of fluid) or begins leaking, remove the Secondskin as per instructions below. It is also normal for some people to experience redness around where the Secondskin was applied to un-tattooed skin. If it becomes itchy or uncomfortable, remove the Secondskin right away.

When you remove your bandage, it is best to do so in the shower. Let the bandage soak under hot water to help loosen the adhesive. Once it has been soaking for a bit, find an edge and slowly peel off the bandage. Do not pull directly away from the skin but rather at an angle keeping the skin taught. You can let the water from the shower hit the inside of the bandage to help with removal.

Once the bandage has been removed, thoroughly wash your tattoo with a mild fragrance free hand soap such as Dial or Dove. Use your bare hands or a soft washcloth made for infants to wash your tattoo. Use a heavy lather of soap and firmly, but not roughly, wash your tattoo. Then make sure to thoroughly rinse off the soap. When you have finished washing your tattoo, pat it dry with a CLEAN towel or paper towel.

Fragrance free lotion may be applied to your tattoo unless your artist specifies otherwise.
